Suspect Captured in Tennille Homicide

Tennille Police Chief Joel Cochran says Joseph Mountain, 28, of Tennille is facing several charges in relation to the Sunday, March 18 shooting that left one dead and sent another to the hospital.

Joseph Mountain is charged with the following:

  • Malice Murder
  • Felony Murder
  • Possession of a firearm during commission of a malice murder
  • Possession of a firearm during commission of a murder
  • Two counts of aggravated assault

The suspect in a deadly shooting that claimed one and sent another to the hospital is now being held in the Washington County Jail.

According to Tennille Police Chief Joel Cochran, the incident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. on Sunday, March 18 on Smith Street in Tennille.

Chief Cochran explained that it began as a domestic situation between Alicia Miles, 36, of Warthen and Joseph Jarvous Mountain, 28, from the Tennille area.

According to Chief Cochran, Miles and Mountain have two children together. Mountain allegedly picked up the children from a relative, and Miles later received a ride from Jessie Jackson III, 60, also of Warthen, to Mountain’s location in Tennille.

A verbal altercation between Mountain and Miles took place, and Mountain allegedly fired a weapon multiple times inside the vehicle.

According to Chief Cochran, Jackson died instantly; Miles received multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to the hospital and later flown to Augusta in critical condition.

The suspect in the case, Joseph Mountain, fled the scene, but later turned himself in to law enforcement shortly after the incident.

Agencies assisting the Tennille Police Department with this case were the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the Sandersville Police Department, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
