George Raymond (G.R.) Lord, Jr., age 87, died Monday, July 1, 2019, in an Augusta hospital following a brief illness. He was born in Washington County, Georgia, on September 6, 1931, and lived in Washington County his entire life. Visitation will be at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3rd, at May & Smith Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the funeral home’s chapel, with burial in Zeta Cemetery, Tennille, Georgia, with Masonic Rites. Reverend Andy Yates and Reverend Jason Loggins will officiate. Pallbearers will be James Currey, Justin Phillips, Lisa Parker, Richard Welch, Willie Green, and Dickie Wester.

He was the oldest son of the late George Raymond Lord, Sr., and the late Orian Brown Lord. He was also predeceased by his sister, Betty Lord Smith, and brother, Jimmy Brown Lord. He was a member of the last graduating class of Harrison High School in 1947. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He began his professional career with Lord Oil Company and in 1997, retired from Thiele Kaolin Company after twenty-eight years of service. Most recently, he worked for Childre Chevrolet and Childre Ford as their senior driver. He was a member of the Hamilton Masonic Lodge #58, served as Secretary, and received his fifty-year apron.

G.R. was well known in the community having worked with WSNT as a sports broadcaster during the 1960s and 1970s. He broadcasted basketball and football for Washington County High School and Brentwood School. He enjoyed talking to people and especially sharing his travel experiences which was his favorite hobby.

His survivors include his wife of forty-one years, Rosalyn Dalton Lord, two daughters, Sherri Dawson and husband, Harold, of Sandersville and Vickie Colson Currey and husband, Jim, of Rapid City, Michigan; two sons, George Lord of Harrison, and Pete Colson and wife, Denise, of Monroe, Georgia; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Pittman Phillips and husband, Justin; James Currey, Allie Dawson, Sydney Colson, and Samantha Colson; one great grandchild, Jackson Phillips.

The family will be at the Lord Residence in Walden Woods Subdivison until visitation on Wednesday, July 3rd.
