Sandersville Council authorized the Mayor and City Administrator to execute the Main Street Start-Up Memorandum of Understanding at their Monday, February 1 meeting.

As previously reported by WACO 100, the Sandersville City Council adopted a resolution supporting the establishment of a Main Street program in October of last year. With this resolution, the City of Sandersville agreed to work with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs Office of Downtown Development by dedicating resources and financial support as available to create a successful downtown economic development program. That resolution goes on to state that the City of Sandersville commits to work collaboratively with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, Office of Downtown Development to meet the standards and principles of revitalizing and re-developing the core commercial district of the community as set forth in the annual Memorandum of Understanding

City Administrator Judy McCorkle explained during the February 1 City Council meeting that in order for the City of Sandersville to acquire the permanent Main Street status, a memorandum of understanding is required. The MOU outlines the necessary requirements set forth by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs for the community’s participation in the Georgia Main Street Start-Up Program for the 2020-2021 program cycle.

Councilperson Jason Davis voted to proceed with the Memorandum of Understanding; Councilperson Henry Watts seconded. Council voted in favor.

When discussing additional requirements for the program, City Administrator McCorkle went on to say that the job description for the City’s Economic Development Director already states that his job is to do economic development downtown, but the Main Street program wants it to specifically state that he serves as Main Street Program Manager for the City.

“We just need to add that title to his job description,” said City Administrator McCorkle.

Councilperson Jason Davis moved to adopt a resolution to amend the authorized personnel schedule and job position, classification, and compensation plan; Mayor Pro-Tem Jeffery Smith seconded, and the vote carried unanimously.
