The Governor Jared Irwin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently recognized the 2020 Good Citizens Ford Sheppard and Mary Preston Alexander.

The two students were selected by their respective schools to receive the honor.

Ford Sheppard, a senior at Brentwood School, is the son of Trey and Emily Sheppard of Sandersville.

Mary Preston Alexander, a senior at Washington County High School, is the daughter of Jason and Jesslyn Alexander of Sandersville.

The DAR Good Citizen Award Program was created to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.  The student selected as the school’s DAR Good Citizen must reflect the following qualities:  dependability, including truthfulness and loyalty; service, including cooperation, courtesy and consideration of others; leadership, including the ability to assume responsibility; and patriotism, including interests in family, school, community and nation, all to an outstanding degree.  The students also are required to write a patriotic essay with the topic revealed at the time of the writing.

The recipients read their winning essays to the members of the DAR chapter and to their families. Because of COVID-19, the meeting was held in-person and virtually.

This year’s title was “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It” with a focus of “How can the combined actions of good citizens keep our country moving forward?”

Ford Sheppard’s essay was selected as the winning essay from the county, and his essay has been sent to be judged at the district level.

Each recipient received a DAR pin and certificate and a monetary gift to be used towards future college plans.
