Sandersville City Clerk Kandice Hartley and Assistant City Clerk Gloria Evans were recently recognized by Sandersville Mayor and Council as part of Municipal Clerks Week.

Sandersville Mayor Jimmy Andrews explained during the Monday, June 7 Sandersville City Council meeting that he learned of the Municipal Clerks Week when reading the Georgia Cities magazine that’s published by the Georgia Municipal Association.

“The people we have working for us are our greatest assets,” said Mayor Andrews, adding, “We love to recognize them and tell them how special they are.”

Mayor Andrews explained that in 1984 and in 1994, Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, respectively, signed a proclamation officially declaring Professional Municipal Clerks Week the first full week of May and recognized the essential role municipal clerks play in local government.

“There are many responsibilities of the municipal and deputy clerk that the public takes for granted,” said Mayor Andrews, adding, “Most people who understand what clerks do recognize that they serve as a central resource for our cities, both within the organizations and in their relationships with the public.”

Mayor Andrews went on to say that City Clerk Hartley and Assistant City Clerk Evans perform a wide variety of duties such as collecting taxes, accepting utility bill payments, issuing business licenses, and keeping minutes.

“This is a time to remember and celebrate the invisible part that is often overlooked in the day to day of serving in that capacity,” said Mayor Andrews. He added, “They [City Clerks] are keepers of history.”
