John Gregory Cooper, age 52, of Sandersville, passed away on Sunday, June 27, 2021 in an Augusta Hospital following a brief illness. A funeral service to celebrate Greg’s life will be held on Thursday, July 1st at 2:00 P.M. at the May and Smith Funeral Chapel with burial in the Sisters Baptist Church Cemetery. Reverend Danny Thomas will officiate. Pallbearers will be Chris Cooper, Matt Cooper, Lonnie Sanders, Michael Robinson, Kevin Lindsey, and Gabe Green.

Greg was born in Baldwin County and reared in Washington County. He began his working career with the City of Sandersville in the Water Department. Greg was a skilled welder and also worked for the Washington County Machine Shop, Bryans Welding, Avery Construction, and Randy Tanner Fabrication. He loved to hunt and fish. Greg was a member of the Dice Creek Hunting Club and Pleasant Grove Hunting Club. He enjoyed many genres of music, gardening, and spending time with his dog. But, above all, Greg cherished his children. He is preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Christopher Whitaker, and his grandmother, Ammie Robinson Price.

Greg is survived by his children, John Christopher “Chris” Cooper and his fiancé Jessica Marsh, and Matthew Evan “Matt” Cooper all of Sandersville, and Tori Beth Cooper of Oconee; grandson, John Rhett Jackson Cooper; father, J. W. Cooper of Dublin; stepfather, Bob Whitaker of Vidalia; siblings, Teresa W. Waggie and her husband Guy of Bonaire, Aaron Whitaker of Yatesville, and Joy Cobb and her husband John of McDonough; aunts, Brenda Prosser, Bertha Sanders, and Lonnell Phillips; uncle, Mike Robinson; and significant other, Wanda Carey.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville.
