The Friends of Hamburg State Park came together last week to celebrate the life of one of their own – the late Earl Trussell who passed away on March 11 of last year.

President of the Friends of Hamburg State Park Mary Jo Sheppard explained during the dinner held on Thursday, September 23 that Earl Trussell was a friend, a teacher, a school, an educational friend, a founding member of the Friends of Hamburg State Park, a follower of Christ, a husband, a father, and a son.

“Although much too short, his [Trussell’s] was a life well-lived,” said Sheppard.

The Friends of Hamburg State Park was established in 2009; Trussell was instrumental in forming this group of dedicated men and women who had a common goal – to see Hamburg State Park thrive.

“Earl was our push behind the scenes,” said President Sheppard, adding, “He always wanted us to put Hamburg first, and to get things done by putting 110 percent into the project.”

Sheppard explained that Trussell was always committed to improving Hamburg, and the entire community.

“His enthusiasm for that next big project was infectious, and a huge component for our success,” remarked President Sheppard when speaking of Trussell’s ongoing legacy at Hamburg State Park. She continued by describing Trussell as determined, a visionary, goal-oriented, caring, and a person who loved life and all that it offered.

To honor Trussell’s work at Hamburg State Park, the Friends of Hamburg planted trees in his memory.

According to Friends of Hamburg State Park President, trees were planted at both campground sites, and a plaque will be placed at the trees on the host site.

“These trees will be rooted in love, and Earl will always be in our hearts,” said President Sheppard.
