Virginia Smith, age 89, of Sandersville passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2021 at the Washington County Extended Care Facility following an extended illness. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held on Sunday, November 7, 2021, at 2:00 P.M. in the Kendall Heights Church of God of Sandersville with burial in Zeta Cemetery of Tennille. Reverend Bobby Williford and Reverend Fred Garrett will officiate. Pallbearers will be Lloyd Denton, Billy Hurt, Jonathan Prosser, Christian Smith, Eric Smith, and Spencer Smith. The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 6, 2021, from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. at the May and Smith Funeral Home.

Mrs. Smith was born on November 9, 1931, the daughter of the late George Elbert Martin and the late Sally Cordry Martin. She spent most of her working career as a seamstress at Delta Manufacturing in Sandersville. Virginia was a devout Christian of the Pentecostal faith. A few of her greatest joys in life included fishing and listening to gospel music. Mrs. Smith enjoyed watching Western television shows, especially those starring John Wayne and James Arnaz. She found great pleasure in cooking for her family. Virginia was a woman who deeply loved and was often referred to as “Mama” or “MeMa” by those who knew her. Virginia was a member of Kendall Heights Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Quincy Smith; children, William (Billy Hurt) and Brenda Fout; sisters, Susie Bell Martin and Doris Cook; and brother, James Ervin Martin.

Survivors include her children, Lillian Bridges (Jimmy) of Sandersville, Peggy Storey (Bill) of Thomaston, Mack Smith, Sr. (Michelle) of Sandersville, Douglas Alan Smith (Ramona) of Tennille, and Donna Lynn Smith (Ronnie Bridges) of Sandersville; sister, Ella Mae Sweat of Tennille; 16 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.
