Football season will be here before you know it. The stands will soon be filled with fans wearing black and gold, and the Golden Hawks will be playing under those Friday night lights in the House of Pain.

Last month, the Washington County Board of Education announced a new Head Football Coach for the Washington County Golden Hawks – Robert Edwards III, who is no stranger to WACO Football.

The Washington County School District will host a meet and greet with Head Coach Robert Edwards III on Thursday, March 3 at 7 p.m. in the Washington County High School Auditorium.

This event was previously scheduled for Wednesday, March 2; however, a scheduling conflict with the Washington County Golden Hawks Basketball Team’s Quarterfinals Round Game in the GHSA AA State Tournament postponed the event.

According to the Washington County School District, during Thursday’s ‘Meet and Greet,’ Head Coach Edwards will speak about his vision for the Golden Hawks. Coach Edwards will also meet with those in attendance to answer questions and share his plans for the upcoming football season.

The meet and greet will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening, immediately following the Washington County Board of Education meeting scheduled for that same night, Thursday, March 3. The Board meeting takes place at 5:30 p.m. at the Washington County Board of Education.

Robert Edwards III is a graduate of Washington County High School where he excelled on the football field, earning the distinction as the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Class 2A Defensive Player of the Year in 1992. He went on to attend the University of Georgia and set the Bulldog record for most touchdowns by a running back in a single game with five versus South Carolina in 1995.

Edwards would become a first-round NFL draft pick in 1998 by the New England Patriots. He rushed for over 1,100 in his rookie season and still holds the league record for most consecutive games with a rushing touchdown to start a career with six. A severe knee injury in the 1998 NFL Rookie Flag Football Game during Pro Bowl Week paused his professional career until 2002 when he returned as a member of the Miami Dolphins. Edwards was awarded the Pro Football Writers Association Halas Award that season for his determination and perseverance to return from the devastating injury.

Robert Edwards began his head coaching career with Arlington Christian School in 2009. He would take the job at Green County in 2012 before most recently serving as Head Football Coach for Riverwood High School in Sandy Springs for four seasons. Edwards owns a 76-win, 55-loss overall coaching record and won two Region Championships with Riverwood in 2019 and 2021.
