Washington County Sheriff Joel Cochran is urging local citizens to utilize caution when answering unfamiliar phone calls.

He claims that the Sheriff’s Office has received multiple reports of individuals receiving calls from persons impersonating a member of the Washington County Judicial System.

“The person is claiming to be Megan Cramer, Clerk of the Washington County Superior Court, and saying that there is an outstanding warrant for Failure to Appear,” said Sheriff Cochran. “They want you to pay a fine over the phone.”

No individual will ever receive a call from the Washington County Clerk of Court or the Office of Megan Cramer regarding payment for an outstanding warrant. Financial information will never be requested from the Court by phone.

“My office will never contact anyone and request payment over the phone,” said Superior Court of Washington County Clerk Megan Cramer. “If you have any questions, please contact the office at 478-552-3186.”

Anyone that receives suspicious phone calls is encouraged to report the activity to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office at 478-552-4795.

“If a warrant was issued by the Court, it would be the Sheriff’s Office contacting you,” said Sheriff Joel Cochran. “However, it will be in person, not over the phone.”
