LAMAR “FESTUS” BROOKS HAWKINS

Mr. Lamar Brooks Hawkins known by family and friends as Festus, died Saturday, October 3, 2020. He was 81 years of age.  A graveside funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 6th at 11:00 A.M.. in Zeta Cemetery in Tennille. Reverend Andy Yates will officiate. Deacons of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will greet friends following the service at the cemetery using social distancing practices.

Mr. Hawkins was born in 1939 in Warthen, the son of the late Isaac Brooks Hawkins and the late Janie Elizabeth Sammons Brooks. He was reared by his older brother Ernest Hawkins and his wife Stella. Lamar graduated from the first consolidated graduating class of Washington County in 1960. He began his working career at J.P. Stevens in Milledgeville prior to starting a 32-year career in the kaolin industry starting with AICC and retiring from ECCI. Lamar was a longtime and active member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and as a church Deacon.  He loved being outdoors cutting wood and gardening and he was an avid fisherman. For 50 years, Lamar served on as a part of the “Chain Gang” on the sidelines at football games for both Brentwood School and Washington County High School. He also served in the Georgia National Guard. Lamar may be most remembered as a true friend to many who possessed a servant’s heart.

Survivors are his wife of 57 years, Catherine Channell Hawkins of Tennille; daughter, Renee Hawkins Jordan and her husband Mark of Sandersville; granddaughter, Mabri Caro Jordan of Athens; and siblings, Lavo Todd of Augusta, Edna Hinton of Thomson, Nora Mae Anderson and her husband David of Tennille, Ray Hawkins and his wife Celia of Thomson, Frank Hawkins and his wife Fannie of Sandersville and Rev. Clark Hawkins and his wife Tricia of Virginia.
