Hubert was born on June 29, 1934 and was a life-long resident of Warthen, Georgia. He was the son of the late Hubert May, Sr. and Emma Mary Walker May. Hubert, affectionately known as “Goat” by his friends, attended Warthen School thru the 9th grade. He gradated from Sandersville High School in 1952 as part of the first graduating class that had to attend 12 grades. He was drafted into the US Army in 1957. Upon returning to Washington County he was also the substitute mail carrier in Warthen for 18 years. After 33 years of employment at AICC as shift foreman and mill supervisor, he retired in 1991. He enjoyed doing electrical work, bailing hay for the public, farming, and raising cattle.
Hubert loved to engage in conversation with everyone, and he always said that he had never met a stranger. He enjoyed reminiscing about growing up in Warthen, playing baseball, and the time he spent in the army. One of Hubert’s favorite hobbies was playing the piano which he did for over 40 years at his home church, Warthen Methodist, where he had attended since a young boy. He was a member of the Methodist Men’s Club and the Cattleman’s Association. His greatest love was his family, especially his grandchildren. A favorite saying of his was “every minute with a grandchild is a cherished moment.” Hubert was preceded in death by his brother, John Gordon May.
