On Wednesday, September 2, Brentwood School announced the cancellation of the school’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. The event was scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 8 and Friday, October 9.
“Brentwood School remains committed to ensuring the health and safety of our students, staff, and community,” said a post to the Brentwood Facebook page. “With that in mind, it is with great disappointment that we announce the official cancellation of 50th Anniversary Golden Gala and Golf Tournament.”
The 2019-2020 school year was the 50th in the history of Brentwood School. Events that recognized past state champions, former homecoming queens, longest tenured school educators, and additional accolade holders were held during the halftime periods of sporting events before the school moved to a virtual learning format, due to the current COVID-19 situation.
“We hope to plan for a similar event later in the school year, as conditions allow,” stated Brentwood.
The 50th Anniversary Celebration, titled the “Golden Gala,” was originally scheduled to be held on Saturday, May 2 at the McCoy Barn in Tennille. On the schedule for the event was a performances by the Kinchafoonee Cowboys, as well as a BBQ Dinner, a Silent Auction, and a $10,000 Raffle. A golf tournament was set to be held earlier in the day. The event was postponed until October before the announced cancellation on Wednesday.
“This decision was not made lightly, however, we felt this is the best way to proceed during these unprecedented times,” said the Brentwood social media post.
The school stated that ticket holders to the “Golden Gala” will be contacted regarding a refund process.
Brentwood School begins their 2020 football season on Friday, September 11. The Brentwood War Eagles, led for a 21st consecutive year by Head Coach Bert Brown, will travel to Milledgeville to face off with longtime rival and reigning GISA AAA State Champion John Milledge.
