Mr. Charles R. “Nick” Nicholson, age 84, of Sandersville died at home surrounded by his family on Sunday, September 6, 2020 following an extended illness. A private family graveside funeral service will be held with the Reverend Lowery Brantley officiating.
Mr. Nicholson was born in Chester, Dodge County, Georgia, the son of the late Ernest Greene Nicholson, Sr. and the late Mattie Lou Hinson Nicholson. He was predeceased by a brother, Ernest G. (Bro) Nicholson, Jr. of Barnesville, GA. After moving to Macon, Georgia as a young boy, he graduated from Lanier High School, and enjoyed life guarding at Vinson’s Valley. Nick attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) in Tifton, where he met his wife of 62 years. He started working for Wilson Electric Company in Macon, and then began a 40 year career with Bearings and Drives, Inc. Nick’s work relocated him to Sandersville, where he built many life long friendships during his career, starting as a salesman and retiring as vice president. Nick loved working and always considered his fellow colleagues and friends as his extended family.
He was an active member of Tennille United Methodist Church for 50 years, where he held various leadership and servant roles, including Chairman of the Administrative Board, Lay Leader, Sunday School Superintendent, and Sunday School Teacher. Nick loved studying and teaching the Bible. He amazed his classes with his ability to remember and recite lessons and sermons from previous years that were imprinted on his mind. Nick was also an active member of the Sandersville Camp of The Gideons International. He was dedicated to representing the Gideons by speaking in churches all across Georgia and sharing the Gideons’ mission of placing Bibles in people’s hands across the world. Nick served on the Board of Directors of Brentwood School in the 1970’s and was a strong proponent of education.
Nick enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, and bird hunting. Those acquainted with him knew that he had a strong work ethic and a passion for teaching his skills to others. It could be said that he was a “jack of all trades and a master of none.” Following retirement, he enjoyed fishing, spending many long hours in his shop, rebuilding motors, and most of all teaching his children and grandchildren how to fix just about anything. Nick loved his family and greatly enjoyed spending time with them.
Nick’s legacy for hard work and determination will always be remembered by those who knew him.
Survivors include his loving wife, Shirley Brantley Nicholson; a sister, Mary Jane Nicholson Lewis of Cleveland, TN; two daughters, Shelia Nicholson Agers and her husband Mike of Gray, GA, and Becky Nicholson Prince of Sandersville, GA; grandchildren, Samuel Nicholas Prince and his wife Sarah, and Charles Brantley Prince; and a great grandchild, Sammy Prince.
