
Jean Batson Smith, age 94, of Oconee, passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at the Heritage inn Nursing Home in Sandersville. A graveside funeral service celebrating her life will be held on Friday, November 20 at 2:00 P.M. in the Bay Springs Cemetery near Oconee. Reverend Johnny Anderson will officiate.
Mrs. Smith was born Jean Tunney Batson. She was named after the boxer Gene Tunney. This was the story she loved to tell. She was born in Wilkinson County, the daughter of the late Charlie B. Batson and the late Ruth Stubbs Batson. She was a homemaker and the wife of the late James Wesley Smith. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, James Larry Smith and sisters, Martha Batson Mills and Elizabeth Batson. She loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed gardening, camping, and fishing. Mrs. Jean was a member of Oconee Church of God.
Survivors include her two beloved sons, Charles Randall (Randy) Smith and his wife Sandra of Tennille and Tony Batson Smith of Milledgeville; daughter in law, Tresser G. Smith of Hiawassee; grandchildren, Delene Smith French and her husband Tony of Sandersville, Tresser Gay Hogue and her wife Kelli of Ohio, Debra Smith Veal of Tennille, James Ivy Smith and his wife Kim of Hiawassee, Charles Randall Smith Jr. of Tennille, Jasmine Smith Williams and her husband Jay of Deepstep, and Tony Ryan Smith and his wife Kat; siblings, Carolyn Batson Anderson of Martinez, Dorothy Batson Bennett of Harlingen, TX, and Sam Batson of Milledgeville.
