The Tuesday, March 16 Special Election in the City of Sandersville had only one item on the ballot – whether or not to allow Sunday Package Sales in the City of Sandersville.

The referendum read: Shall the governing authority of the City of Sandersville be authorized to permit and regulate package sales by retailers of malt beverages, wine, and distilled spirits on Sundays between the hours of 12:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.? Yes/No?

A total of 111 voters were in favor, while a total of 50 voters were against it, according to the unofficial and incomplete election results.

Voter turnout was low for this Special Election. On Election Day, 90 votes were cast. Of those 90 votes, 56 were yes, and 34 were no. Advance/Early voting, which ran from February 22 – March 12, saw 64 voters; of that total, 50 voted yes, and 14 voted no. Absentee by mail saw seven votes – five voting yes, and two voting no.

The Sandersville Mayor and Council held the first reading of the proposed ordinance change concerning Sunday Package Sales in the City at their Monday, March 15 meeting. A second reading, scheduled for April 5, will need to be approved before retailers can conduct Sunday sales in the City of Sandersville.
