Voter Turnout Low in Sandersville’s Special Election

Only 161 voters, or 4.1 percent, of the City of Sandersville’s 3,971 registered voters decided to vote in the City of Sandersville’s Tuesday, March 16 Special Election.

The Special Election decided whether or not the allow Sunday package sales in the City of Sandersville between the hours of 12:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.

A county-wide referendum was passed last year by voters for the unincorporated areas of the County; this special election pertained specifically to the incorporated area of the City of Sandersville.

Only residents of the City of Sandersville voted in this special election.

According to the official election summary, 68.94 percent of Sandersville voters were in favor of allowing Sunday package sales, and 31.06 percent were against it. Those voting totals were 111 ‘yes’ to 50 ‘no.’

As previously reported by WACO 100, on Election Day, 90 votes were cast. Of those 90 votes, 56 were ‘yes,’ and 34 were ‘no.’

Advance/Early voting, which ran from February 22 – March 12, saw 64 voters; of that total, 50 voted ‘yes,’ and 14 voted ‘no.’

Absentee by mail saw seven votes – five voting ‘yes,’ and two voting ‘no.’

The Sandersville Mayor and Council held the first reading of the proposed ordinance change concerning Sunday Package Sales in the City at their Monday, March 15 meeting. A second reading, scheduled for April 5, will need to be approved before retailers can conduct Sunday sales in the City of Sandersville.
