Traffic Crash on State Route 24 Claims One

A Wednesday afternoon motor vehicle crash on State Route 24 near Smith Robson Road in Washington County claimed the life of a 45-year-old Sandersville man, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The traffic crash took place around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 25; the Georgia State Patrol’s Post 33 from Milledgeville was requested to investigate.

According to the initial report, a tractor trailer was traveling west on State Route 24 when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The tractor trailer entered into the eastbound lane.

A red Dodge Ram truck, driven by 45-year-old Walter Cheely of Sandersville, was traveling east at the time.

The GSP’s report notes that the front of Cheely’s Dodge Ram struck the passenger side of the tractor trailer. 45-year-old Walter Cheely sustained fatal injuries from the collision.

This fatal motor vehicle accident remains under investigation.

The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division of the Georgia Department of Public Safety are both assisting with this investigation.
