Sandersville Mayor Jimmy Andrews proclaimed Friday, September 17 – Thursday, September 23 as Constitution Week in the City of Sandersville.

Friday, September 17 marked the two hundred and thirty fourth anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention.

“It is fitting and proper to accord official recognition to this magnificent document and its memorable anniversary, and to the patriotic celebration which will commemorate this occasion,” said Sandersville Mayor Jimmy Andrews.

The Daughters of the American Revolution initiated the observance of the Constitution in 1955 when they petitioned the U.S. Congress to adopt a resolution for the observance of this document. The Congressional resolution was adopted by Congress and signed into Public Law 915 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956. The goals of this celebration week are threefold:

– To encourage the study of historical events that led to the framing of the Constitution in 1787,
– To inform people that the Constitution is the basis of America’s great heritage and the foundation of our way of life
– To emphasize to U.S. Citizens their responsibility to protect, defend, and preserve the United States of America Constitution.

“I encourage all the citizens of Sandersville to study the Constitution and reflect on the privilege of being an American with all the rights and responsibilities which that privilege involves,” said Sandersville Mayor Andrews when proclaiming the week of September 17-23 as Constitution Week.
