Tennille City Council unanimously approved a zoning change request during their Monday, March 21 City Council meeting.

City of Tennille’s Building Official Mike Wiggins explained that the property, located at 210 East South-Central Avenue in Tennille, is owned by Bonny Kay McNair. This property is the site of the former Miss Kitty’s Attic business.

“There was an old house there, but that was torn down before Ms. Bonny McNair bought it,” said Building Official Wiggins.

McNair requested to change the zoning for that property from R-1 (single family residence) to C-1 (central business).

“That goes in line with everything else on that street,” said Building Official Wiggins. He added, “The property next to it is zoned commercial.”

Tennille’s Planning & Zoning Commission heard the zoning request during their Monday, March 14 meeting. Building Official Wiggins stated that the Planning & Zoning Commission unanimously voted to recommend the zoning change.

When discussing the request, Building Official Wiggins stated that notice of this request was properly advertised in the legal organ, and a sign was placed on the property to notify the public.

This request was originally scheduled to be heard in February; however, because the Planning & Zoning Commission lacked a quorum during their scheduled public hearing, the request was heard in March.

Councilperson Deborah Rhodes asked what McNair’s plans are for the property; the owner has not decided what she would like to do with the property.

Councilperson David Hartley remarked that he lived on that property until he was 21 years old.

“That place has a lot of memories for me,” said Hartley.

After hearing the request, Tennille City Council unanimously voted to approve the zone change from R-1 to C-1.
