Washington County Sheriff’s Office Awarded $86,505 in Safety Grants

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office was recently awarded a total amount of $86,505.90 in two separate Georgia Highway Safety Grants from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

The first grant in the amount of $64,466.30 is designated towards the purchase of speed enforcement equipment and initiatives to be implemented in Washington County for improvement of vehicle occupant safety.

A second grant of $22,039.60 is to assist in the funding of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety South Central Traffic Enforcement Network, which serves Washington, Johnson, Laurens, Wilkinson, Dodge, Emanuel, Toombs, Telfair, Treutlen, Montgomery, and Wheeler counties.

Lieutenant Ben Purdue of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office serves as the South Central Traffic Enforcement Network Coordinator.

“We are excited about this 100 percent funded program and look forward to helping reduce traffic accident injuries and deaths,” said Washington County Sheriff Joel Cochran.

The effective date of both grants is from October 1, 2023 through September 30, 2024.
