The Washington County Emergency Management Agency is urging local citizens to exercise caution throughout today as consistent rainfall and heavy gusts of wind are to persist in the area.

Most of Middle Georgia is currently under the observance of a wind advisory with strong gusts from 20 to 40 mph.

Washington County EMA states that being indoors in an interior room away from windows is the safest place to be during a wind storm.

The EMA is encouraging individuals to refrain from driving when possible. If motorists must operate a vehicle, they are reminded to keep a firm two-hand grip on the steering wheel, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and be on the lookout for debris in the roadway.

Homeowners are asked to store or secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture, trampolines, sports equipment, or trashcans that hold a flight risk during a wind storm.

Washington County Public Schools are observing an at-home virtual learning day. The school district cancelled in-person classes on Monday after discussions with local authorities.

All athletic, extra-curricular, and after school activities were also postponed.

Washington County Public Schools encourages parents and guardians to monitor local media, their child’s school’s Facebook page, and the ParentSquare app for information on if in-person classes are to resume on Wednesday. Contact info@wacoschools.org for further details.

The Oconee Fall Line Technical College also cancelled all Tuesday classes at their Sandersville campus. OFTC states that in-person learning will return on Wednesday.

Washington County Emergency Management Agency encourages citizens to stay alert of all inclement weather by signing up for CodeRED weather alerts on their website or by downloading the CodeRED weather app.
