A man was shot in the late night hours on Wednesday of this week, just before midnight brought forth the Thanksgiving holiday.
The individual sustained the gunshot wound in the lower portion of his leg.
According to Ken Parker, Captain of the Sandersville Police Department Criminal Investigation Division, the shooting was via an apparent “ambush” outside of the man’s residence.
The incident occurred in the parking lot of the Sun Rise Apartment Complex on East Church Street.
Captain Parker stated that as the victim was walking towards his living unit, another man emerged from a parked car and opened fire.
The shooter then fled the scene by his vehicle.
The victim was transported by helicopter to a medical center in Augusta. He is stable and expected to make a full recovery.
A person of interest has been identified in this case as the potential shooter. An arrest is soon expected.
This now marks the second consecutive year for a shooting incident in Sandersville around the Thanksgiving holiday.
In 2023, 42-year-old Thomas Womble, Jr. of Sparta, was shot and killed outside of the Loft 48 Venue, which is located in the Tractor Supply and Word of Life Church shopping center behind Dairy Queen.
A gathering of over 500 people led to a melee, as multiple brawls then turned to gunfire.
27-year-old Xzavious Wicker of Sandersville was arrested and charged with felony murder, malice murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.
The killed individual was also the victim to another crime of gun violence in 2020 that claimed one life and injured six others in Sparta.
