Over two-and-a-half months removed from the historic havoc stemming from Hurricane Helene, Washington County continues its restoration and clean-up efforts.
The Washington County Emergency Management Agency is ensuring citizens that debris removal efforts are still underway within the county. EMA Director Russell Riner is also reminding residents of the important guidelines to follow for successful debris pick-up.
1.) Placement: Position all debris in the right of way for pick-up.
2.) Separation: Distinguish vegetative debris (branches, leaves, and logs) from construction and demolition debris (building materials, lumber, etc.) EMA Director Riner states that it is imperative for vegetative debris to be separated from non-vegetative debris. The trucks will be unable to pick up your debris pile, if mixed.
3.) Obstructions: Keep debris out of the roadway so it can not block traffic or utilities.
4.) Access: The debris removal trucks can extend and collect debris up to 27 feet into the right of way. Debris piles must be located within this distance from the roadway, as the trucks are not allowed to enter private property and must remain on public access roads during the collection process.
In early October, Washington County contracted Southern Disaster Recovery as the debris removal service. SDR is a rapid response contractor that specializes in post-catastrophe cleanup efforts.
As has been the case since the storm, debris is being picked-up on all county and city maintained roads.
To alert Southern Disaster Recovery of a debris pile located in the right of way on your property, visit washingtoncountyga.gov. Choose the ‘Hurricane Helene Debris Collection’ section under the ‘Residents’ tab. Complete the simple form by alerting the county of the address and type of debris. Then hit ‘Submit.’
The deadline to place debris by the roadside is Thursday, January 2.
Washington County also offers four locations for residents to drop off storm-created vegetative debris. No construction or demolition debris will be accepted.
1.) For all Washington County Residents: 4700 Kaolin Road, Sandersville (Old Landfill)
2.) Sandersville Residents: 420 Beck Boulevard (Next to the Animal Shelter)
3.) Tennille Residents: 1000 East South Central Avenue (Corner of Grady Mertz Road and East South Central Avenue)
4.) Davisboro Residents: 200 Josey Industrial Drive (Off of Main Street)
