Mrs. Wydel Walters Palmer, age 96, passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2019 at the Extended Care Facility following an extended illness.  A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 27th at 11:00 a.m. in May and Smith Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Westview Cemetery in Wrightsville. Reverend Danny Thomas will officiate. Mrs. Palmer’s great grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Palmer was born and raised in Washington County, the daughter of the late J.T. Walters and the late Adel Tompkins Walters.  She began her long history of work while living in Brunswick during WWII as a retail clerk at Woolworth.  Following the war, Mrs. Palmer along with her husband returned to Oconee where she continued her working career with Royal Manufacturing prior to becoming the activities director for the Oconee Nursing Home. Later in life she continued a tradition of hard work with her extended family at Herbs Fish Place.  Mrs. Palmer was an active member of Ivey Baptist Church in Johnson County and possessed a lifelong love of Southern Gospel Music. While living at ECF, she became an expert at putting together jigsaw puzzles. Mrs. Palmer is predeceased by her husband, J.T. Palmer.

Survivors are her sons, James Palmer of McIntyre and Larry Palmer of Wrightsville; grandchildren, Mike Palmer and his wife Ashley of Charlotte NC., Derek Palmer and his wife Julie of Martinez, Jason Palmer and his wife Karen of Swainsboro and Chris Palmer and his wife Tiffany of Perry; eleven great grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Eleanor Walters of Wrightsville.

Donations may be made to the donor’s favorite charity in memory of Mrs. Palmer.
