Sandersville City Council will consider a resolution concerning mask usage at their Monday, February 15 City Council meeting.

The decision to nix the proposed mask ordinance came during the most recent Sandersville City Council meeting held on Monday, February 1.

An hour-long public comment session took place during the Sandersville Council’s workshop at 4 p.m. on Monday afternoon. Crowds gathered outside the Council Chambers to voice their opinions and concerns regarding the Sandersville Council’s proposed mask ordinance.

As with all the City’s meetings since the pandemic began, a conference call was available for those wishing to hear the meeting; for this particular meeting, the City also offered a Zoom option for the public.

In total, the City Council heard from six individuals who were in favor of the mask ordinance; they heard from five who were opposed. They also heard from one person who stated he was fine with wearing a mask, but was opposed to any fines. As previously reported by WACO 100, City Council asked that the fines be removed from the proposed ordinance at the previous meeting.

During the workshop, Michael Hokanson, the North Central Health District’s Public Information Officer, discussed the role of masks. He stated that masks act as a barrier to contain respiratory droplets from spreading.

Following the public comment session, Sandersville City Council discussed their options regarding the mask ordinance. Ultimately, the second reading of the proposed ordinance failed. The majority of the City Council voiced support for a resolution concerning mask usage. The City Administrator and the City Attorney will draft that resolution and present it to the Mayor and Council at their Monday, February 15 meeting.
