Washington County Chamber of Commerce President Katie Moncus recently met with the Sandersville Mayor and Council and the Washington County Commissioners concerning the 2021 Kaolin Festival.

According to Moncus the Chamber of Commerce is in the process of planning this year’s festival for Friday, October 8 and Saturday, October 9 at the former Sandersville Elementary School grounds.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s Kaolin Festival was canceled.

When discussing the health and safety of the festival, Moncus explained that a representative from the Department of Public Health is included in the monthly festival meetings.

“And we’re following any and all guidelines that they give us,” stated Moncus.

This year’s setup at the former Sandersville Elementary School will incorporate social distancing to provide a safe environment.

“We’re looking forward to celebrating that season,” said Chamber President Moncus. She continued, “We are encouraging other groups, civic organizations, and clubs to have additional events so that we can spread things out.”

Moncus noted that other communities have month-long festivities with a variety of events occurring throughout the month. She noted that Dublin has numerous events during March for the St. Patrick’s Day festivities.

“We’d really like to see our Kaolin Festival turn into that so there’s other things for people to enjoy and do,” said Moncus.

In addition, Chamber President Moncus encouraged different cities to host events, especially during the Kaolin Festival weekend.

“People can go to Tennille; they can go to downtown Sandersville, and that helps spread it out, and gives people the opportunity to enjoy the rest of our community,” said Moncus.

This year’s Kaolin Festival will also utilize the new branding, “We Dig It,” that was created through the Archway Partnership.
