Sandersville City Council adopted a resolution recognizing Georgia Cities Week as October 3-9 during their Monday, October 4 City Council meeting.
With that resolution, the Sandersville Mayor and City Council encouraged all citizens, city government officials and employees to do everything possible to ensure that this week is recognized and celebrated accordingly.
Sandersville Mayor Jimmy Andrews explained that Georgia Cities Week offers an important opportunity to convey to all the citizens of Georgia that they can shape and influence government through their civic involvement.
“City government is the closest to most citizens, and the one with the most direct daily impact upon its residents,” said Sandersville Mayor Jimmy Andrews when reading the resolution. He added, “City government is administered for and by its citizens, and is dependent upon public commitment to and understanding of its many responsibilities.”
Sandersville Mayor Andrews went on to say that this week offers an important opportunity to spread the word to all the citizens of Georgia that they can shape and influence this branch of government through a variety of different projects and information.
“Georgia Cities Week is a very important time to recognize the important role played by city government in our lives,” said Mayor Andrews.
According to the Georgia Municipal Association, this year’s theme is “Georgia’s Cities: Shaping the Future,” giving cities the opportunity to:
– Share information about the valuable services cities provide to residents, including an inside look into city operations and how cities positively impact their quality of life
– Highlight successful community projects and infrastructure enhancements
– Connect residents with one another
– Build or improve working relationships with state leaders and legislators
Georgia Cities Week is also an opportunity to celebrate community achievements and recognize volunteers and city employees. Last year, more than 120 cities participated.
Several ribbon cuttings within the City of Sandersville were scheduled during Georgia Cities Week. The first ribbon cutting took place on Monday, October 4 at the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant on the Fall Line Freeway; the Sandersville Flower Shop’s ribbon cutting took place on Thursday, October 7 at their business on South Harris Street.
Due to rain, the ribbon cutting at Glow Boutique on East Haynes Street will be rescheduled.
