Washington County Schools will observe a virtual learning day on Friday, January 21 due to forecasted winter weather.

In a letter dated January 19, Washington County School Superintendent Dr. Rickey Edmond explained that the school system has monitored the weather system forecasted to impact the Washington County area beginning on Thursday, January 20.

“After receiving the latest update from our local Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and the National Weather Service, we will shift to virtual learning on Friday, January 21,” wrote Superintendent Dr. Edmond.

According to the letter, the individual schools will send home information explaining how the students will participate.

In addition to shifting to virtual learning, all athletic events will be cancelled due to the unpredictability of the weather system.

In-person instruction is scheduled to resume on Monday, January 24.

“We want to ensure that our students and staff remain safe during this projected inclement weather,” said Superintendent Dr. Edmond. He added, “Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and understanding.”

According to the National Weather Service, East Central Georgia is forecasted to see the onset of light winter precipitation late Thursday night continuing into Friday into early Saturday. Refreezing of liquid water, or black ice, is possible.
