Mr. Mark “Chip” Hammond, Jr., age 74, of North Lake Drive in Sandersville passed away on Wednesday, March 3, 2022, at the Heritage Inn Nursing Home following an extended illness. A viewing and family visitation to celebrate the memory of Mr. Hammond will be held on Sunday, March 6, 2022, from 2:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. at the May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville.
Mr. Hammond was born on April 2, 1947, in Memphis, Tennessee, the son of the late Mark Benjamin Hammond, Sr. and the late Dorothy Steuer Hammond. He was reared in Key Biscayne, Florida and was a graduate of the Miami Edison High School. In Miami, Florida, Chip is known as “the only man to climb the Key Biscayne Lighthouse.” Mr. Hammond would move to Sandersville and begin a lengthy career as a Calcine Operator at Imery’s Performance Minerals of North America. He was regarded as a man of generosity, who never met a stranger, and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Chip enjoyed scuba diving and being outdoors. Mr. Hammond was an extremely active and wonderful father and grandfather, always available to his daughter and four grandchildren. He was of the Episcopalian faith. In addition to his parents, Chip is preceded in death by his sister, Marcia Hammond.
Survivors include, his daughter, Kimberly Hammond Kent (Mark) of Sandersville; grandchildren, Brittney Crow (Allison) of Warner Robins, Mark Austin Burgamy (Amanda) of Sandersville, Sianna Hammond of Sandersville, and Gage Hammond of Sandersville; great-grandchildren, Aiden Votipka, November Votipka, Ashton Burgamy, and Liam Burgamy; siblings, Barbara Horton of Pensecola, Florida, Dorothy “Dee” Hammond of Pensecola, Florida, Sandy Hammond (Delinda) of Colorado, and Rachel Coats Greer of Memphis, Tennessee; former wife, Linda Fulghum (Michael) of Byron; and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
The family suggests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 106 SRP Drive, Suite A, Evans, Georgia 30809.
