Norma Layton Steele, age 76, of Sandersville passed away on July 8, 2022, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, July 11th in the May and Smith Funeral Home Chapel with burial at the Jackson Baptist Church Cemetery. Reverend Mike Jones will officiate. Pallbearers will be Dean Davis, Bill Hartley, Roan Miller, Russell Sheppard, Trevor Sheppard, Ken Vance, Ron Wallace, and Franklin Wood. The family will greet friends on Monday in the May & Smith Funeral Home from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service.

Mrs. Steele was born in the Rawlings Sanitarium of Sandersville and reared on the Layton Family Farm near Riddleville. She started her schooling in Riddleville under the instruction of her mother for several grades. Norma was an honor graduate in the Washington County High School Class of 1963. Mrs. Steele continued her education at the University of Georgia to earn a Bachelor degree and Master’s degree, also as an honor graduate. She would relocate to Atlanta to follow her mother’s footprints for work as an educator. Norma then moved to Hayward, California for many years before retiring and retreating home to her Family Farm near Riddleville. Mrs. Steele and her family were devoted members of the Jackson Baptist Church. She possessed a sincere love for all animals, especially cats, never turning away a stray who crossed her path. Norma was talented singer, pianist, painter, and florist. Mrs. Steele is preceded in death by her parents, Charles Vernon Layton and Mildred Price Layton.

Survivors include her brother, Benjamin Layton and wife Patsy of Wrens, and dear friend, Sue Anglin.
