Georgia DOT Activating Temporary Traffic Signal Along US 441 in Milledgeville

untitled-2-8

Weather permitting, the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) anticipates activating a new, temporary stop-and-go traffic signal in Milledgeville on Thursday, October 26 at the US 441 (North Columbia Street) intersection with the Milledgeville Mall.

This temporary traffic signal is just north of the Roberson Mill and Dunlap Road intersection with US 441.

The strategically placed signalized control is designed to aide in safe traffic flow to the Mall and businesses located along the Big Lots shopping center.

Some entrance and exit driveways along this stretch of North Columbia Street will convert from full access drives to right-in/right-out configurations to improve traffic flow and reduce conflicts for the busy commercial area. Those access location alterations are as followed:

For US 441 Northbound:

~ Mattress Firm

~ Panda Express & Popeyes

For US 441 Southbound:

~ Ruby Tuesday to the Milledgeville Mall

On October 9, Georgia DOT maintenance crews modified striping along northbound and southbound North Columbia Street to allow for left and right-hand turning lanes.

The new signalized intersection remained “bagged” until Monday, October 23, when Georgia DOT signal crews began a 72-hour flashing operation as a pre-warning to motorists before full activation.

Georgia DOT is asking motorists to drive with caution as crews and contractors are working in the area. Local traveling public are urged to stay alert to message boards and Georgia DOT-East social media channels for further information in the coming weeks.

“The tremendous growth in Milledgeville has brought challenges in managing traffic,” said Corbett Reynolds, District Engineer in Georgia DOT District 2. “The temporary signal will provide some relief while the DOT continues to work on plans to deliver a project that will introduce traffic operation improvements on Roberson Mill Road and North Columbia Street.”
