Washington County School Superintendent Dr. Rickey Edmond announced changes to mask usage in a letter dated Thursday, March 3 to parents, guardians, and community members.
Superintendent Dr. Edmond explained that the school district would shift to “optional” mask wearing for all students and staff, effective Friday, March 4. This shift also pertains to students riding buses.
In his letter, Dr. Edmond thanked parents, guardians, community members, students, and staff for their support over the last two years in regard to COVID-19.
“The last two years have been a challenge and we couldn’t have gotten through them without your support,” said Superintendent Dr. Edmond. He added, “With your dedication, involvement, and engagement we have been able to successfully navigate through this pandemic.”
Superintendent Dr. Edmond explained that the two years weren’t easy.
“But we have come through this stronger than ever,” said Dr. Edmond.
When discussing the decision to shift to optional mask wearing, Dr. Edmond stated that the school district monitored data and collaborated with the local COVID-19 task force, Board of Education members, administration, and a sample pool of teachers.
The Washington County School District will continue to monitor the state and local COVID-19 data, and should the cases increase, the district will shift back to the mask wearing expectation.
“We’ll also follow CDC/DPH guidance, and continue following our mitigation strategies to keep our students and staff as safe as possible,” said Superintendent Dr. Edmond.
In his letter, Dr. Edmond commended parents, guardians, students, staff, and community members for their flexibility, patience, and understanding.
“I am looking forward to seeing smiling faces,” said Superintendent Dr. Edmond.
